Game park - ”Zwierzyniec”
Forest areas constitute over 18% of the total area of Złotów. There are numerous parks, squares and green areas within the administrative boundaries of the town. One of Złotów’s most precious green areas is the game park; it is a 100 ha forest and park complex located in the north-western part of Złotów (in the Złotów Forest Inspectorate) between the Zaleskie and Miejskie lakes. The trees in the game park are mostly deciduous – beeches and oaks, these are the remnants of the woodlands which covered this area in the Medieval period. The trees here are 110-190 years old with two natural monuments – 2 pedunculate oaks which are several hundred years old.
In 1976, the town amphitheater was built on the premises of the park. It also houses the seat of the Złotów Forest Inspectorate and the Center for Ecological and Forest Education ”Zwierzyniec” - with its “Green Classroom”, animal pen, meteorological station, aviary and arboretum. The main role of the center is to promote ecological awareness among children and young people.
There are five educational trails leading through the park: the Explorer’s Trail, Frog Trail, Hunter’s Trail, Forest Trail and Dendrological Trail. You can meet all kinds of animals inhabiting the area, e.g. badgers, hares, roes, foxes, squirrels, etc. Since 2016, part of the orienteering trail – the “Green Checkpoint” - has run through the game park.
Since 2007, the game park has been used as an arena for one of the major sport events in Złotów: “Złotowski Bieg Zawilca” [The Złotów Anemone Race], which is held annually on the first weekend of May. During the event there are races for preschoolers and schoolchildren over distances from 100 to 800 m, depending on age, Nordic walking and the main race event with a distance of 5 km.
